Nancy - something I tried was using paper.li to capture lists of those important sources and found it's a nice daily summary of the most popular tweeted links of everyone (and everything) I follow. Also, I found that even with really heavy muting, great content rises to the top since people will comment, old school RT, etc on the link. I hope you enjoy this new experience! I hear you Ross. For a while, lists and watching the reply column worked just fine for me, and during the day, at my computer, I still use that same technique. However, mornings and evenings I use this technique and it's quite different, and I really like it :)

Thanks for a terrific post, Jonathan. I've put Tweetbot on my iPad and am giving it a whirl this morning. I'm moving cautiously since I know that some of the sources you've listed help me stay in touch with marketing developments (for example, bit,ly links to blogs I may want to read and Paper.li rounds-up information). But I love the notion that I can shut down bots at will. Like you, I'd rather connect with real people who want to connect tweet-by-tweet, as opposed to those looking to build a Twitter empire. I just said bye bye to SocialOomph (not picking on them here, just testing the concept and they're automated). I will find more today, obviously. Thank YOU!

I see the need, but don't have this problem because I use Hootsuite and most of my interaction happens in my mention column which is first in my dashboard. I want to engage with people. If I want to surf I will go to my homefeed. I think the filters aren't smart enough yet. A whole platform is too broad. I would rather make category or people lists.

Surprisingly, no food porn and cat pics. (maybe after muting instagram..) Some of the random thoughts are still there, but often lead to conversation... Also, twitter is different things to different people. This is allowing me to really think seriously about how the non social media people use the platform. Like I said, I get why people use the third party tools. I just personally don't have a need to market myself in the stream, so I'm trying on a different pair of glasses to get a different viewpoint :)

The problem is that people are trying to be LOUDER AND LOUDER as the "room" gets noisier and noisier. At some point, you either have to walk out of the room, ask everyone to shut up, or turn down your hearing aid. Maybe that's a bad analogy, but it's how I felt.

Aaron, excellent article. I'm glad I'm getting a few people to think about this. I know I'm muting just automated tools - I'm also muting things that I just didn't feel like seeing. Also, just for discussion sake - I still have TweetDeck with 0 filters and lists, so throughout the day when I'm at my desk, i'm still catching things here and there.

I came over from Aaron Biebert's blog post. Surely, Twitter is noisy and I sympathize with your noise reduction strategy. Aaron makes a good point too, however.

Ultimately, if your strategy is adopted by say 20 percent of the active/real Twitter population, Twitter will become less relevant than it already is. In that case, most of that time you have put into Twitter will come to naught.

That's the catch 22.

I think muting Instagram and Linkedin is a mistake IMHO. I use Instagram specifically to engage/chat/share my thoughts with Twitter friends and keep it in a folder (Instagram's app) at the same time. Linkedin is similar. The tweet is my main reason for doing the Linkedin update (nobody reads them anyway).

I also use Foursquare to engage with Twitter and attach a picture/location to my tweet. I understand muting it because most people don't put pictures or share much when they check in.
Many of the things you are muting aren't even automated tools. In every single case that I update Twitter via Instagram, Linkedin, FourSquare, Flipboard, Facebook, and Pinterest I am doing it in real time and appreciate people who engage back.Most of these updates have nothing to do with marketing messages (unless I'm sharing videos I've produced/directed). They're just messages from me...

Definitely intrigued. I don't follow quite as many people as you do but I'm close. Just this morning I told my husband, "If I have to see one more quote...". I can see the value of not missing the realness which I thrive on. Cool. Too bad I'm a technodope that can't master tweetdeck and haven't got an iPad. ;-)

Believe it or not, I was actually attempting to present a session on Twitter for Teachers/Administrators at an education conference in Hot Springs, AR. The conference is called the Hot Springs Technology Institute. You can search Twitter for #hsti2012 to see what was going on.

I was a first time presenter and didn't know if I had "beginner's luck" or was a victim of "Murphy's Law?"

It's really just a pet peeve of mine, since PURL is a derivative of URL, and no-one goes around calling websites "URLS (pronounced EARL). You create a dynamic, personalized microsite, and possibly a long term campaign for lead generation. The "industry" may call that a "pearl", but I believe the focus should be more on the end solution and not the protocol. PURL -> Personalized Uniform Resource Locator.

cute article. My son is two and already holding onto the Xbox 360 controller wearing a headset and yelling at the TV whenever someone is playing a game on there.

Then there is the fact he can recognize which ring tone is to what phone and yells PHONE! whenever it rings and rushes to go answer it lo.

And I won't go into the fact he knows how to turn on the TV and understands "On Demand" already to watch Adventure Time episodes with me?

Or that he can turn on or off any game system we have in the house?

My fear is to have him turn into a mini Jabba the Hut - so I make sure to run him around outside and try to make that the priority rather than technology.

My thought on the video are 2 fold. 1) if you are already doing a video - go back and watch it. Sometimes you're so focused on what you're going to say next - you miss the nugget of wisdom someone else said. 2) It take some getting use to, but just general sit down chats captured on video do make for great ideas. You don't have to plan to use the video for any sort of production - it takes the stress off of everyone.

Old fashion writing is a great way to capture ideas. Just be careful while you're driving :)
